Inflation, Illusion, and Greatness: Reframing the Steroid Era

The steroid era in Major League Baseball produced some of the most eye-popping numbers the sport has ever seen. Seventy home runs. On-base percentages above .600. Slugging percentages that seemed to break the scale. But like any period of inflation, raw numbers alone don’t tell the full story.
When offensive production is adjusted for era, the mythology begins to shift.
Take Barry Bonds’ 2001 season. His record-setting 73 home runs shrink to just 43 when adjusted for league context. On the surface, that feels like a collapse, going from untouchable to merely elite. But that framing misses the larger point. Even after adjustment, Bonds still owns four of the top ten OPS seasons of all time. The scale changes. The dominance does not.
This tension between inflated totals and preserved greatness defines the steroid era. The Illusion of Power
Across the league, power numbers compress dramatically under era adjustment, and they do so in a way that is impossible to ignore.
Mark McGwire’s iconic 1998 season drops from 70 home runs to 44. Sammy Sosa loses 151 career home runs and nearly 100 walks when viewed through a normalized lens. Jason Giambi and Gary Sheffield each lose roughly 80 home runs from their career totals.
Even before looking at individual players, the league-wide data tells the story. The chart of total home runs by year shows a clear spike throughout the 1990s, a sharp upward bend that simply does not exist once the numbers are adjusted to a neutral baseline. The explosion wasn’t subtle, but rather structural.
That same pattern appears at the player level. In the raw versus era-adjusted home run plot, nearly every season for these hitters falls below the identity line. In other words, almost every performance from this group looks smaller, once context is applied, and some significantly more than others.
But while the illusion of power fades, something more interesting takes its place.

Not All Inflation Is Equal
Era adjustment doesn’t just shrink numbers—it separates players.
Alex Rodriguez is the clearest example of this tension. He loses 149 career home runs under adjustment, a massive drop that would seem to fundamentally alter his legacy. But at the same time, his era-adjusted WAR actually increases. That suggests his value wasn’t dependent on inflated power alone. He was contributing in ways that survived normalization, including defense, baserunning, and overall offensive consistency.
And yet, there’s a complication that can’t be ignored. Rodriguez never fully matched his peak production once the steroid era faded. His post-era numbers, while still excellent, don’t reach the same heights. That raises an uncomfortable but necessary question: was he an all-time great independent of context, or a player whose skillset was perfectly aligned with a very specific environment?
Other players tell different versions of the same story. McGwire’s totals collapse, but his efficiency does not. Even after adjustment, his at-bats per home run remain historically low. The AB/HR chart shows this clearly; his adjusted points still sit among the most extreme. The volume disappears, but the underlying skill remains.
This is where the distinction becomes important. The steroid era didn’t just inflate performance; it also amplified certain types of performance. Players built around pure power see the biggest drops. Players with broader skill sets tend to retain more of their value.

What Actually Changes
Once you move beyond individual examples and look at the full table of percent changes, the patterns become clearer.
Home runs and slugging percentage take the biggest hit. Many seasons fall in the range of a 20 to 40 percent decline, with extreme cases going even further. Bonds’ 2001 season dropping over 50 percent is the most dramatic example, but it’s far from the only one. Slugging follows closely behind, reflecting how much of that power surge was embedded in extra-base production.
OPS declines as well, but not nearly as sharply. Most seasons fall in a moderate range, suggesting that while power was heavily inflated, total offensive production was not entirely artificial.
On-base percentage is where things get interesting. Across the board, OBP remains relatively stable. In many cases, the change is only a few percentage points in either direction. That stability aligns with the timing of the era itself. This was still the early phase of sabermetric thinking. The league had not yet fully embraced on-base percentage as a central offensive metric, a shift that would later be popularized by Moneyball. Because OBP wasn’t being maximized across the league, it wasn’t inflated in the same way.
Walk rates, on the other hand, are inconsistent. Some players lose large portions of their walk totals—Sosa, in particular, sees a significant drop—while others fluctuate depending on context and pitching behavior. Bonds’ late-career walk numbers, for example, are as much a reflection of how pitchers approached him as they are of the environment itself.
And then there’s WAR. Compared to everything else, it barely moves. While individual seasons fluctuate, the overall changes are much smaller than what we see in home runs or slugging. That’s a crucial point. Even in a distorted offensive environment, total player value remains relatively stable. The context affects how that value is expressed, not necessarily how much of it exists.

Pitching in a Broken Environment
If hitters benefited from the era, pitchers had to survive it.
League-wide ERA rises sharply during the 1990s, reflecting the surge in offensive production. But once those numbers are adjusted, the curve flattens significantly. The environment didn’t just inflate hitting, it distorted pitching outcomes.
Roger Clemens provides a clear case study. His raw ERA numbers suggest decline or inconsistency at various points, but his era-adjusted ERA tells a different story. Nearly every season falls below the identity line, indicating that he was performing better than his raw numbers suggest.
What’s more interesting is that his WAR remains relatively stable. Just like with hitters, the context changes the surface-level results but not necessarily the underlying value. Clemens wasn’t suddenly a different pitcher; he was just pitching in a different environment.
His 1997 move to Toronto is also worth noting. That season marks a shift in both context and performance, and it’s possible that league factors, ballpark effects, and timing all contributed to the change. In a high-offense era, even small contextual shifts could have outsized effects on traditional statistics.
Satirical Aside: Feel bad for pitchers like Roger Clemens. Man was throwin’ gems in a league where every lineup looked like an All-Star team on protein shakes.
It Wasn’t Just Steroids
It’s tempting to explain all of this through one lens: performance-enhancing drugs. But the reality is more complicated.
The steroid era unfolded during a period of league expansion that diluted the overall talent pool, and at a time when baseball was battling steadily declining interest as more fans gravitated toward football. That slide was only compounded by the lasting damage of the 1994 strike. Perhaps most importantly, it all preceded the full globalization of the sport and the gradual thinning of rosters as the large Baby Boom cohort aged out of the game. The wave of talent from Latin America and other regions that define the modern game had not yet arrived to fill that void.
All of that matters.
Because when you adjust home run totals downward, you’re not just removing the effects of PEDs. You may also be correcting for a weaker competitive environment. Pitching depth was thinner. Talent distribution was uneven. Elite hitters were, in many cases, facing less resistance than they would in later eras.
This reframes the entire discussion. The steroid era wasn’t just inflated, it was also imbalanced.
From Generational to Contextual Greatness
So what happens when you strip all of that away?
Players don’t stop being great. But the shape of their greatness changes.
The gap between “generational” and “all-time great” narrows. Seasons that once felt historic begin to look comparable to others across different eras. The mythology softens, and what remains is something more grounded.
Bonds remains an outlier. His combination of power and plate discipline survives any adjustment. Rodriguez still profiles as one of the most complete players of his era, even if his peak looks different in hindsight. McGwire remains one of the most efficient power hitters the game has ever seen. Clemens remains dominant relative to his environment.
But they are no longer operating on a separate scale. They are part of a continuum.
Final Thought
The steroid era didn’t just produce bigger numbers; it produced significantly distorted ones.
Era adjustment doesn’t erase what happened. It clarifies it. It shows which performances were products of context and which ones transcended it.
And in doing so, it turns the question away from numbers and toward something more meaningful:
